Stitch by stitch, quilt making has played an integral role in African American history. But the storytelling embedded in the quilts themselves is more than mere tradition. In the Afrofuturism & Quilts: Materializing Black Futures & Black Womxn’s Quilt Legacies Exhibition now on display through Friday, July 19, at the MSU Union Art Gallery, local and national quilt artists and quilt scholars explore embodied and theoretical connections between Afrofuturism and quilt making.

“Creativity in the Time of COVID-19,” an MSU project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, asks the public to share their stories about the role creativity has played in their lives during the pandemic as well as any creative works they’ve made that have helped them get through this past year.

CREATE! Micro-Grant Virtual Exhibit Launches Displaying Winning Projects

The CREATE! Micro-Grant Program supported the launch of 12 student projects that analyze and respond to racial injustice and the struggles brought on by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These projects, ranging from interpretive dance and musical performances to traditional Anishinaabe quill work, videos, podcasts, personal essays, and poetry, can now be viewed online through the CREATE! Micro-Grant Virtual Exhibit.

The Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry Events on November 19th and 20th

The Department of English Creative Writing Program is pleased to co-host editors and contributors of The Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. Online readings and panel discussions will take place via Zoom on Thursday, November 19, at 7:30 p.m. and Friday, November 20, at 2 p.m. The event is free, but registration is required.
