The Creative Writing Program cultivates the integration between living and writing. We support the the holistic practice of our student-writers and invest in the care of their whole creative selves through active engagement on community building, collaboration, and process-oriented mentorship. We offer co-curricular events, mentorship opportunities, editing and publishing classes, and generative workshops that support our shared vision for reaching and teaching the whole writer– the person, the student, the drafter, the dreamer. Through these, students learn how to develop life-sustaining creative practices and a creative practice-sustaining life.

MSU CREATIVE WRITING CLUB

We are continuing to build our joyful and open MSU Creative Writing Club , which has been built by students for students. It promises to be an exciting, warm, and safe space for all those wanting to make new friends, explore their own imaginations and expand their writing practice. RED CEDAR REVIEW

MSU undergraduates manage Red Cedar Review, one of the longest running undergraduate-managed literary journals in the nation. We publish the work of undergraduate writers and artists across the nation. If you are an MSU student interested in working with the journal for an internship or extracurricular activity, please email the editors at redcedarreview@gmail.com.

THE WRITERS’ STUDIO

A space open to MSU writers and their transdisciplinary collaborators, The Writers’ Studio is a welcoming and inclusive space for those who want a quiet place to write and an easeful space to collaborate. With writing desks, reading couches, and a snack bar with refreshments, we hope that emerging writers will find a new home for their practice in Wells Hall C704.

Here, you can:

  • Brainstorm with peers
  • Hold meetings with other creatives

LIVING/ BREATHING/WRITING ANNUAL SERIES

Check out our cherished Annual Living/Breathing/Writing reading and performance series that brings some of the most inventive, interesting writers and transdisciplinary practitioners to meet you at MSU. Each year, we hope to program events that open new connections to unexpected ideas from both emerging and established authors, artists, and performers. We host visitors and student-practioners in many events that recur each year: MSU Alumni Readings, Regional Writers, Living Pedagogies, HYPHENS: Annual Lecture & Performance, and Live Lit!
