Scholarships

The Department of English Awards and Scholarships for 2009. Amounts awarded will range from $200 to $1500, to be disbursed in Fall 2009. Although faculty in the Department may invite eligible students to apply for particular scholarships, any student who meets the criteria is welcome to nominate themselves. Awardees will be announced on the Department website by the end of April. For each award, students should fill out a nomination form in the Department office (201 Morrill) and submit a writing sample as described for the particular award in support of their application, along with any additional materials indicated below. Deadline for receipt of materials is 6 March 2009.


Lois L. Hudson Scholarship: For English majors who have taken English 210 or 211H since spring 2008, have a GPA of 3.5, and no more than 60 credit hours overall. Writing sample should be a 5-10 page critical essay from any English course (not necessarily 210).


Carlisle-Pickering Award: For English majors with 30-60 credit hours overall; minimum GPA of 3.7; submit as writing sample a critical essay of no more than 15 pages from any English course.


Dr. Ellen Brown Scholarship I: For any English major with 60-90 credit hours overall, 3.7 G.P.A. in major. Students should submit as writing sample a critical essay of no more than 15 pages from any English course and letter of recommendation from English Dept. faculty member.


James D. Rust Scholarship: For any English major with 60-90 credit hours overall, 3.7 G.P.A. in major. Students should submit as writing sample a critical essay of no more than 15 pages from any English course and letter of recommendation from English Dept. faculty member.


Estralita Johnson Ward and Lloyd D. Ward Scholarship
: open to any English major iin good standing with minimum GPA of 3.5 and evidence of participation in cultural activities or community service. In addition to a writing sample of a critical essay from an English course, students should submit letter of application addressing their work in the major and in the community or cultural activity, along with a letter of recommendation from someone qualified to affirm their community or cultural work.


Ambrose D. Patullo Scholarship: open to any English major with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5. Students should submit as a writing sample a critical essay on a poem or poetry. For students in the English major with Teacher Education certification.


Dr. Ellen Brown Scholarship II
: For English Ed students with more than 80 credits overall, 3.5 G.P.A. Students should submit as writing sample a critical essay of no more than 15 pages from any English course and letter of recommendation from English Dept. faculty member.


Marion Kurtz Croak: For English Ed students with more than 80 credits overall, 3.5 G.P.A. Students should submit as writing sample a critical essay of no more than 15 pages from any English course and letter of recommendation from English Dept. faculty member.


For students in the English major with Creative Writing Concentration:

Arthur N. Athanason Scholarship: For students in Creative Writing who will be graduating fall 2009 or later. Submit two creative writing samples each a minimum of 5 pages.


Marcia E. Platt and Douglas L. Ruble Scholarship
: For students in Creative Writing who will be graduating fall 2009 or later. Submit two creative writing samples each a minimum of 5 pages.


For students in the English Department’s Study Abroad in Ireland program Dr. Louis A. “Andy” Doyle scholarship: Students should submit a letter of application to Prof. Salah Hassan, Director, Summer in Ireland 2009.
