Research

Our faculty members and graduate students are involved in important research that makes a real contribution—that is, research that helps others to analyze, synthesize, and apply various literary, theoretical, linguistic, and cultural perspectives. We embrace the research-intensive mission of an AAU, comprehensive/doctoral university.

Research takes many shapes, one of the most important being publication of scholarly and creative work in peer-reviewed journals of national and international significance and in books and films by leading academic and commercial firms.

Research also takes shape in graduate and undergraduate classrooms. Our students take courses in subjects and fields at the cutting-edge of the humanities, from film studies to ethics to poststructural theory to creative nonfiction. The innovative ideas published this year by our faculty members were tested and tried in lectures, debates, and classroom conversations that occurred two, three, and four years ago. We have many award-winning teachers in the department, and it’s no coincidence that many of them are also award-winning scholars who conduct work in diverse research areas. As a result, our students are themselves engaged in the important issues and debates of the day.

Because we also teach at a land-grant university, we take our responsibility of “connecting knowledge to serve society” seriously. We engage in outreach efforts that benefit local, state, and national constituencies, and our research takes shape in talks by faculty members at local schools; in service on state, regional, and national advisory boards; in online discussion groups; in mentoring programs; and in countless other ways in the community.
