Study Abroad Opportunities

English Studies at the University of Aarhus, Denmark

Available in fall or spring semesters, this 16-week program at the University of Aarhus allows students to study at Denmark’s highest-ranking English department. Aarhus is a large but safe and accessible city with plenty of opportunities to experience Danish culture. For those wishing to explore outside of the city, Copenhagen, other Scandinavian cities, and Germany are only a few hours away.

English Literature in London, England (UK)

The English Literature and London program takes place throughout a six-week period from early July to mid-August. Students select classes from a list of courses offered on the main campus that are enhanced by out-of-class learning experiences designed to expose them to relevant cultural, literary, historical, and political contexts. Classes meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, leaving plenty of time for weekend travel and independent study.

Film in Britain

A five-week summer study abroad experience in London, England, the Film in Britain program allows students to investigate film history, criticism, and creation in conjunction with Europe’s most esteemed film archive and research facility—the British Film Institute. Classes, held Monday through Thursday, are designed to develop the analytical, interpretive, and production skills of students and are enriched by evening events and visits from British scholars, directors, and critics.

English Literature in Dublin, Ireland

Offered in spring, the nine-week English Literature in Dublin program takes place from late February to early May. Students take classes at the Irish Writers Centre that focus on a variety of subjects, including Irish literature, film, and European culture. Frequent guest lecturers speak to program participants on topics related to Irish writing and culture; some even guide students through a number of locations of historic, artistic, or architectural significance. Field trips are vital to this program. Each year, students attend the Dublin International Film Festival and the Cúirt Literature Festival in Galway; they also visit Sligo.

Summer Program in Dublin and Western Ireland

A six-week experience, the Summer Program in Dublin and Western Ireland gives students an opportunity to learn about Ireland’s literature, art, history, and culture through a variety of formats, including coursework, presentations from guest lecturers, and out-of-class activities. Field trips, which vary in length, are a fundamental part of the program and are designed to enhance what students learn in the classroom. Regular program field trips include visits to Galway and Sligo.
